Jul. 13th, 2011 01:20 pmSo, on the heels of my last post, I wanted to elaborate a little more on how I deal with another conundrum of artists and other creatives everywhere--pricing. I don't have control over the prices of my books, but I have full control over the prices of my artwork, and since I make a pretty big range of pieces, I don't just have a bunch of pre-made price tags to put on infinite iterations of the exact same design, slightly tweaked. So I have to put a lot of thought into this with every artwork update.
There is no single factor that determines how I will price something, and everything I create gets its own individual assessment. Apologies to those who were expecting an easy answer to "How do I price things!", but in doing this for over a decade I still don't have a single, set formula that works. And yes, I do often go back and adjust prices, either when I feel I've been a bit too enthusiastic in pricing something, or when I feel the current price is really shorting me and kicking it up a bit will still be a fair deal. So it's not an exact science; I'm not even so sure it's an art, either. It is, however, a constant learning experience.
( More specific information under the cut! )
So there you have it. Pick and choose what works for you, feel free to adapt, etc.
