Love it! I've been wanting to make a drum for a year and a half now, and I just found out I might come into some raw hide; might make for a good first-drum project. Do you mind if I hit you up with a few questions? (Or do you know a good "guide to making a drum" site you could link me to?)

To be honest, I'm not sure. My bf bought it a while ago (probably more than a year ago) to make a drum for himself, but he never got around to it. I mentioned wanting a hide drum today and he offered to me. I haven't seen it myself yet, though, so I don't even know how large it is. I think my main questions right now are 1) how to figure out what frame size I can use; can you tell without wetting the hide, or do you need to wet the hide and stretch it a bit to see? 2) I was hoping to paint it, are there certain things to keep in mind for painting drum heads? (And would oil paint be all right, or is acrylic better?) Thanks!

If you can get me pics and dimensions I may be able to help figure out what you can do with it. As to paints, I use acrylics with lots of sealant, but I've heard oils work, too.

Aw, that would be awesome! It might be a few weeks; I'm not sure when I'll see him next (he's over an hour away). I'll definitely take you up on that, though. =)

I was thinking I'd prefer to use oil; I like the idea of the oil aging with the drum and with use. But we'll see how it speaks to me I guess!
