Hrrmmm. Been going back through the TED Talk archive, and found this fascinating video on visual hallucinations in the visually impaired. It really makes me wonder about the stories of blind seers, and how many of them were just having misfirings in the brain.

well, and we are wired to *find patterns* such that we can hear voices in white noise, or see things in a crystal, or a fire---if they had the 'Talent', then anyway they found to trigger the Knowing is valid.

I am not good at handling cards, I have been known to do a reading based just on the cards that fall out while I shuffle--yet interpreting these Misfires seems to work much of the time,(with My deck, that sort of expects this)

Assuming I'm not misreading your post

Personally I wouldn't dismiss it yet, since I have wondered how much of it really worked or works, regardless of how the brain may or may not have worked differently. I myself would like to visit at least one someday to find out, and besides, how do we know if they weren't firing in response to something?

Why must these visions be one or the other? Why not both?

My brother actually experiences this. He was legally blind when he was younger. When his vision was corrected, he started having visual hallucinations. Still does sometimes when he is overwhelmed by visual stimuli.
