Dec. 6th, 2011 04:11 amSort of a piecemeal artwork update; I've made a bunch of things over the past couple of weeks--lots of tails, which for the most part I won't have here (but you can see them on Etsy and Artfire)--but plenty of other things, too. And I'm gonna share the neat things here :)
As always, prices do not include shipping, animal parts may only be shipped in the U.S., LAYAWAY is available, and part of the proceeds go to groups like the Defenders of Wildlife and Wolf Haven International. Everything is available on my Etsy store and Artfire shop. And if you don't see what you really want, custom work is available!

Materials: Rabbit fur, leather
Tail length: 3 1/4"
Belt length: 52"
Description: So--real bunny tails are teeny-tiny, about the size of a silver dollar. So I decided to make a human-sized rabbit tail, just for those folks who have that swift, populous totem! I took some grey rabbit fur from one coat, and some white rabbit fur from another, and stitched them together, and stuffed them with the tiniest scraps of leather and fur left over from my work. I then put it on a belt made from brown recycled leather, and it's ready to wear for totemic ritual, dance, cosplay and more!
Price: $30

Materials: Wolf fur, leather
Tail length: 22"
Belt length: 59"
Description: This ENORMOUS Alaskan wolf tail is as big as my personal one! It's a lovely pale grey, lots of white with some sprinklings of darker grey and a striking black tip. I put it on a hand-braided belt I made from recycled black and blue leather. A gorgeous tail for ritual, dance, and more!
Price: $120 (again, keep in mind that I also just listed a bunch of much less expensive coyote, fox and other tails on Etsy!)

Materials: Wolf skin, leather
Description: A classic gray wolf, this beautiful skin came to me with all of his paws and claws intact, a beautiful tail--and a sadly smushed head! I took the time to reshape his face and ears and add in detailing, stitch up some holes all over him, and brush out his pretty fur. I then added straps so he may be worn--one set ties under the chin; a second (the main weight bearer) ties his forelegs over the wearer's chest so most of the weight is carried on the shoulders, not the throat; as third set ties the back legs to the wearer's legs. He is a HUGE, gorgeous wolf, 70" long from tip of nose to tip of tail, and a really, really nice hide in general. He would fit most people; I am 5'4", for the record, and the picture shows how he fits on me.
I've put a lot of work into this guy, and he's not just some skin that someone tied a couple of straps to and called it good! If you want a really nice totem dance hide, complete from nose to tail to tips of claws, he's your guy :) Great energy to him, too, as I was working with him. He's ready for sacred dance and ritual, totemic work, and more!
I can also add details, such as my signature fangs, or other decor, for additional cost for materials and labor--customization is my specialty, so feel free to ask :) I guarantee the workmanship on all my masks and other headdresses, and should this ever need reshaping or other repair, I will do it free of charge!
Price: $500

Materials: Wolverine skin, leather
Description: Here's something you don't see every day--a wolverine headdress! I started with a really good quality pelt, with all paws and claws. The head was pretty badly squashed and stiff, but I reshaped it as much as it could be, and looks a LOT better. I added in detailing on the face, and then gave this lovely girl (yes, she's female) deerskin straps--one set to tie under the chin, one to wrap the forelegs around the upper chest/neck (more for balance and decoration than weight-bearing), and a second weight-bearing set at the hind legs to wrap around the waist and keep the pressure off the chin strap.
She's 49 1/2" long from tip of nose to tip of tail, and while you can see she fits my 5'4" frame pretty well, she'll also fit most people (the straps allow for a variety of body types). As with all my work she's been ritually purified and is ready for totemic dance and other sacred rituals; she's also just a really pretty hide in general.
This is a rarity--wolverine pelts are much harder to come by than, say, wolf or coyote! And you don't see them as headdresses/costumes very often, either.

Materials: Coyote fur, deerskin, secondhand wool yarn, rabbit fur
Description: There's a story behind this mask--literally! I wrote a new Coyote story, "How Coyote Lost His Hearing", which you can read in full at http://therioshamanism.com/2011/11/27/how-coyote-lost-his-hearing/ - the story may help this Fool's Mask make about as much sense as anything Coyote ever does!
I started with a craft quality coyote face; the nose is pretty badly squashed, which quirks the muzzle a bit. I made it into a wearable mask. For the fluff in the story I used some white rabbit fur left over from larger projects, and the yarn in the story is reflected in the strands of assorted wool yarns tucked with the rabbit fur into the coyote's ears.
This will fit most people; the mask is 10" across at the top, and the yarn drapes down over two feet below the mask at the longest! Two strong deerskin straps--one buckskin, one chocolate--tie the mask on comfortably.
Excellent for any sort of Coyote magic you may wish to bring into your life--if you're that brave, that is!
Price: $40.00

Materials: Wolf hide, leather
Description: This is an amazingly large, beautiful, full-furred wolf mask, the very nicest and most luxurious white wolf mask I've ever done! He was all squashed and flat when I got him, with a damaged nose to boot! So I carefully reshaped him, and other than a tiny quirk due to his nose being not quite perfect, he's been turned into this absolutely gorgeous mask--the pictures don't begin to do him justice! I had thought about adding some decorations, but decided that he was just too pretty as-is.
You may wear him as either a mask or a headdress, as shown in the pictures. He has two black leather straps to tie on with; his eye holes are a bit smaller because they're the natural ones rather than cut open, but I walked around a while wearing him and didn't have any problems with vision.
He'd be a wonderful mask for totem ritual and dance, theater, costumery, and more!
I can also add details, such as my signature fangs, or other decor, for additional cost for materials and labor--customization is my specialty, so feel free to ask :) I guarantee the workmanship on all my masks and other headdresses, and should this ever need reshaping or other repair, I will do it free of charge!

Materials: Wolverine skin, leather, acrylic paint, wool yarn, acrylic yarn
Description: This wolverine has a story behind him--literally! This headdress is a three-dimensional illustration of my original story, "How Wolverine Devoured the Sun", which you can read for free at http://therioshamanism.com/2011/11/29/how-wolverine-devoured-the-sun/ . The story, and the headdress design, was partly inspired by this work by one of my favorite artists: http://ravenari.deviantart.com/art/Wolverine-as-Totem-93962884
This hide is particularly appropriate to the story; during the tanning process, he was left too close to the fire, and it dried and hardened his hide on one side--not to the point of being completely inflexible, but he has a couple of small weak spots here and there that just need a little more delicate handling.
I don't limit myself just to the perfect, taxidermy-quality hides; in fact, I prefer taking ones that have been damaged in some way, and reclaiming them into something beautiful. And so I chose this one to be the carrier of this story of fire.
His back is decorated with a leather disk with a stylized Sun in it; the Sun is painted with blue and purple strands like DNA, signifying the fact that all life on Earth is powered by the Sun--an important detail in the story I wrote. I added hand-braided strands of secondhand wool and acrylic yarn to further symbolize the power of the Sun radiating out of Wolverine, as well as his blood being shed. (See why you need to go read the story? This will make so much more sense!)
The headdress is tied on with a pair of strong, hand-cut brown deerskin straps. Because the pelt's legs are missing, it's light enough to still be worn comfortably. While this headdress was designed around the story I wrote, it's appropriate for any sort of totemic work and ritual involving Wolverine energy.
This is a rarity--wolverine pelts are much harder to come by than, say, wolf or coyote! And you don't see them as headdresses/costumes very often, either.
I can also add details, such as my signature fangs, or other decor, for additional cost for materials and labor--customization is my specialty, so feel free to ask :) I guarantee the workmanship on all my masks and other headdresses, and should this ever need reshaping or other repair, I will do it free of charge!
