Sounds about like the place I worked at in high school, as well as the UPS and FedEx warehouses I almost worked at in college. The warehouse I worked at was for a catalogue-based company, instead of an Internet-based one, but the same principle applied. $8/hour, for us high schoolers, part-time packers (the complement to your author's job). It was one of the higher-paying jobs in the county.

Sadly, it's not just the cost of "free shipping," but a hidden cost of shipping in general (as well as a lot of third party providers, in general, especially in the tech industry). If you want to boycot one or more companies for their warehouse policies, you'll have to give up your Etsy shop, because it's a problem that, like I said, afflicts FedEx and UPS (and for long distance parcel shipment, the US Postal Service piggybacks off FedEx, so even using the USPS won't help). If you want actual change, you'll need to go to OSHA, the IRS ("permalancing" is technically illegal, that's why staffing agencies are popular - it's a loophole), and any workers' rights groups you can find and raise a stink about it. As long as people don't know, the companies won't change. Just boycotting won't work, and as long as people are desperate to put food on their families' tables, they're going to do what it takes to do that, even if it means nearly killing themselves, which means no walk-outs or sit-ins to get people's attention.
