May. 2nd, 2012 06:11 pmJust a quick art update, some of the highlights of the past few weeks' work!
As always, prices do not include shipping, animal parts may only be shipped in the U.S., LAYAWAY is available, and part of the proceeds go to groups like the Defenders of Wildlife and Wolf Haven International. Everything is available on my Etsy store. And if you don't see what you really want, custom work is available!

Materials: Whitetail deer antlers, deerskin, acrylic paint
Description: I attached these real 2 point x 2 point whitetail deer antlers to a deerskin-covered headband, and painted it with stylized greenery in acrylic paints. They're lightweight and nicely balanced, and would be wonderful for Beltane and other pagan celebrations, as well as FaerieWorlds and other such costume-loving festivals!
Price: $40.00

Materials: Turtle shell, deerskin, shell turtle
Pouch dimensions: 7" x 5 1/2" (outside; inner dimensions somewhat smaller, maybe 4" x 4 3/4"
Strap length: 48"
Description: I created a pouch out of soft deerskin, and put it inside a red slider turtle shell that's been sealed to protect the scutes. Rather than being glued in, it's suspended with a network of deerskin cords. The top of the shell is decorated with a turtle made of polished shell. There's also a foldover flap to cover the opening; leather cord fastens it shut.
Price: $40.00

Materials: Coyote skull, acrylic paint, deerskin, red leather, coyote claw, stones
Dimensions: 23" long (not including tassel)
Description: This coyote skull has a nice, sharp rattle to it from the gravel inside the skull casing. Unlike a lot of the skulls I make into rattle, this guy is blessed with almost all of this teeth still intact! It had just a little bit of damage, so I made some minor repair before painting it in acrylics and adding several layers of protective sealant. There are two handmade deerskin tassels, one on either side. I also wrapped the sturdy wooden handle in deerskin, hand-stitching it with brown waxed linen cord and red artificial sinew to echo the colors of the skull. There's a tassel or "tail" at the end, several inches long, on which I stitched a piece of red leather and a real coyote claw.
Price: $135.00

Materials: Coyote skull, acrylic paint, dowel rod, leather, coyote fur, coyote tail, gravel, sealant
Dimensions: 24" long (not including tail)
Description: I started this rattle with a complete coyote skull--jaws, all teeth, the works! I painted her up with acrylics and sealed it well, and added a solid wooden handle which I wrapped in a variety of bits of leather, coyote fur, and a whole coyote tail. I've hinged her jaw with a technique I developed, and so the snapping of her teeth adds to the rattle of the stones in her brain case. She's a very COYOTE-ish coyote, and would carry a lot of that energy into rituals, drum circles, and more.
Price: $160.00

Materials: Coyote skin, leather
Description: When I got this nice, soft, home-tanned coyote hide, he was in need of some help--somewhere in the skinning process he ended up with a bunch of little holes in his hide, poor guy! However, I sat down and painstakingly stitched them up, and other than one tiny little hole on his muzzle he looks fantastic! I perked up his ears and fixed his face, added details and straps, and he's ready to wear. He'd be a great, lightweight hide for drum circles and sacred dance, and he has a great coyote energy to him which would make him an excellent companion in totemic and other rituals. He measures 61" from tip of nose to tip of tail, so he'd fit just about anyone. This 'yote is eagerly awaiting a home where he will not just be loved and cherished as the sacred being he is, but can be an active participant in spiritual practices--he's ready to go!
Price: $210.00

Materials: Vintage goat hide, fabric, yarn
Pouch dimensions: 4 1/2" x 5"
Description: This pouch is made from vintage blue-gray goat hide from an old coat, lined with secondhand fabric for strength--it looks a bit like faux wolf fur, though it's definitely real goat hide! The drawstrings are secondhand gray and black wool yarn, hand-braided by yours truly. This would be an excellent pouch for a smaller tarot deck, a set of runes or ogam, dice, and more! A good choice for upcycling fans, too.
Price: $11.00

Materials: Skunk fur, leather, yarn, glass beads
Pouch dimensions: 4 1/2" x 2 3/4"
Necklace cord length (each): 13"
Description: This is a rather unusual pouch! I made it from the face fur of a striped skunk (the eyes are stitched shut) and a bit of scrap black leather. The drawstring, necklace cords, and decorative tassels are all hand-braided black and white secondhand yarn, and I added black and white glass crow beads as accents. Wonderful for small sacred items like crystals, herbs, fetiches and more--even daily medications can be stored in here!
Price: $15.00

Materials: Metal hoop, reclaimed fox fur, artificial sinew, glass beads, ceramic pendant
Dimensions: 7 1/2"
Description: I had a strip of deep purple-dyed fox fur from the hood of an old damaged jacket. It's been sitting around waiting for me to challenge my preference for earthtones, and this is the result! I wrapped it around a metal hoop, and suspended a handmade (not by me) ceramic pendant with a stag and triple moon symbol on it in the center. I added black artificial sinew dangles with assorted purple, gray and metallic glass beads, and a braided artificial sinew hanging cord. This is definitely one of a kind, and it made me happy to step out of my comfort zone a bit!
Price: $21.00

Materials: Deer scapula, acrylic paint, waxed cord, deerskin, rooster feathers, metal charms, coyote canine tooth, clay beads, amber, copper beads, wood beads, stone bead, bone beads
Dimensions: 13 1/2" long from top of bone to end of longest tassel
Description: This isn't just a pretty wall hanging--I created it specifically as a small, sacred shrine to to Life and Death. The many components of this, made from animal, plant, and mineral sources, celebrate the diversity of life and the habitats that support them; the leather oval has the sun, moon, and a raindrop painted on it to add to the mix. The deer scapula as a centerpiece reminds us that death is also a part of the life cycle, as do the rooster feathers. A wonderful piece for meditation, especially if you don't have a lot of room, as well as something to integrate into an existing sacred space.
Price: $25.00

Materials: horse hide, cedar frame, wood dowel, acrylic paint, waxed cord, deerskin
Diameter: 13"
Depth: app. 3"
Description: The hoofbeats of the spirit horse can be heard in the deep, ringing tones of this beautiful drum I have made. Rather than working from a kit, I cut the head and lacing by hand from a beautiful dark horse hide, and laced the head over a handmade (not by me) cedar round frame. The lacing is much stronger and durable than artificial sinew, and as it is cut from the same hide as the head it creates a more harmonious energy. I have chosen to leave it plain, though if you would like it painted or otherwise decorated at additional cost please contact me.
The beater is made from a thick hardwood dowel, painted brown with acrylics, and wrapped with chocolate deerskin. The head of the beater is padded and also wrapped in deerskin. The beater may also be further decorated at additional cost.
As with any hide drum, damp weather can cause the hide to go a bit slack, dulling the tone. However, when dry this drum has a wonderful voice, with no off spots in the head. Responsive to touch, it would be equally at home in an apartment where soft volume is key, as well as making itself heard in a chorus of drums at a fire circle.
As with all of my creations, this drum has been ritually purified as part of my shamanic practice. It has been specifically created for shamanic and other spiritual work, with the help of the spirits of the animals (horse and deer) whose remains have been incorporated into the drum and beater. This is no wall hanger, but a drum made by a practicing shaman for spiritual work!
Price: $150.00

Here's my next custom MLP offering--a trio of ponies! The oak, ash, and thorn are three sacred trees in some Celtic and other European traditions, and today are often associated with modern witchcraft and other magical practices. Since so many My Little Ponies over the years have been named after plants, I decided to create ponies to honor these time-honored trees.
Oak was made from a first run Minty (Applejack mold); she's painted in various browns with gold ties in her hair and gold eyes, and her cutie mark is an acorn. Ash is a repainted Sugar Grape (Rainbow Dash/Fluttershy mold) redone in pale green with green-tinged white and silver hair, silver eyes, and an ash leaf as her cutie mark. And for Thorn I repainted a Sweetie Swirl (Rarity mold) in light brown with deep green hair, copper eyes, and sprigs of hawthorn berries as her cutie mark. The second picture shows their colors the best!
Each is just shy of 2" tall--these are the little ones! All three are painted in acrylics over primer with several coats of sealant for protection; they are NOT recommended as toys for children. They are being sold as a set only--if you would like any of them recreated individually please contact me about custom work.
Price: $30/set
And, as always, word of mouth makes the world go 'round. Want to support this self-employed artist? Pass this post on to anyone you feel may be interested!
