Sep. 11th, 2012 10:43 amHi, everybody! Long time, no post. I *never* thought I'd get to that point on LJ/DW, but then again I wasn't self-employed then, either!
So. The past couple of months have basically seen me being slave to the festival circuit. This being my first year trying to do "full time" vending, it basically meant trying to sign up for as many events as I could, and having most of my weekends eaten up by them. It was definitely a learning experience; some events were more lucrative than others, but some of the most fun events were the ones that didn't make much financially. So it was a trade-off to be sure. I do need to be a bit more discriminating in choosing events to vend; it's a lot of work to spend a day prepping and packing for an out of town event, then drive to it, then get set up and spend the weekend there, then pack up and head home and play catch-up, especially when it's several weekends in a row.
And frankly? I'm exhausted. So I may just go to some of the smaller fun events as an attendee and use that as some decompression time next year.
However, I'm now really looking forward to having more time to get stuff done around the home. I have a whole bunch of writing I want to do, and I need to finally get the animism anthology, "Engaging the Spirit world", out the door. I also have many, many, many art projects that have been percolating in my head and I want to make at least some of them happen this winter. Plus I want to get at least one more overnight backpacking trip in before the weather gets too cold, and I want to do a lot of hiking, too. And sleeping. Lots of sleeping.
Speaking of not-work stuff,
smcinpdx and I have been doing a bit of a staycation. We like taking a break every quarter, and the last two times we did working vacations to California. This time we instead did some exploration closer to home. He took me to OMSI and the Oregon Zoo for the first time, and then yesterday we went to the Oregon Aquarium in Newport. So far the aquarium's been my favorite, though that's not surprising; I LOVE ocean critters, and it just continues my love affair with the Pacific.
He's really been good for me, reminding me to get out and take breaks, insisting I go hike even when I start letting work intrude, and randomly taking me out to the movies. It can be tough sometimes when we're bogged down in our respective works, but we enjoy each other's company enough that it all works out.
So here's a bit of a photo album from the past couple of months, just for you :)
Back at the beginning of July I headed out to the coast to do some workshops at Ancient Light, and did some beach walking while I was there. A few pics from that:

And then this is a single shot I took while I was at Sunfest at the solstice:

At the full moon at Lammas, I did my first-ever solo backpacking trip. I climbed up Chinedere Mountain, which I had backpacked with
baxil two years previous. I spent a rather lovely, solitary evening there, and slept quite well in the moonlight. This is what I woke to:

Not sure when I'm going to ease back into using LJ/DW more, but I did want to at least check in. I am still using more short-form things like Facebook and Tumblr, but I miss this place.

on 2012-09-12 11:42 pm (UTC)I'm so glad S has been consistently good for you, and it sounds like you need someone to remind you to take it easy and have breaks! And that he understands that a break for you may be hiking. :D
It's awesome that you've been working as a full-time vendor this year, but it does sound like a break or at least... a temporary slowing down might be in order. :) It would be awesome to see you around here more often, but in the meantime, I'll also be happy just seeing these posts as they come. <3

on 2012-09-24 07:23 pm (UTC)Yeah; sometimes I feel like he has to put up with too much of the crazysauce, but he seems to like being here, so I'm not gonna complain!
You're one of the people I really miss in all this :(
